Lombok Surf Spots
Lombok is renowned for its exceptional surf spots, particularly in the southern and southwestern regions of the island. Here are some of the well-known surf spots:
Situated on the southwestern tip of Lombok, Desert Point is legendary among the global surfing community. It’s famed for its long, hollow, and perfectly formed barrels that can offer rides up to 300 meters when conditions are right. This wave is best suited for experienced surfers due to its powerful swell and shallow reef.
This area serves as the hub for surfers traveling to Lombok and offers a variety of waves suitable for all levels. Around Kuta, you can find beginner-friendly spots like Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan, while more advanced surfers might head to breaks like Mawi and Grupuk. Grupuk, in particular, has several peaks with different characteristics, including inside Grupuk for beginners and outside Grupuk for more experienced surfers.
Located on the southeastern coast of Lombok, Ekas Bay offers two main breaks: Inside Ekas and Outside Ekas. Inside Ekas is great for beginners and intermediates, with more manageable waves. Outside Ekas is for the more daring and experienced, with larger and more powerful swells.
And there are many more cool surf spots in Lombok
Senggigi – This is the main tourist town on Lombok and has a reef break that’s suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. The wave here breaks over coral and can offer some nice barrels with the right conditions. It’s more accessible than some of the remote spots and a good option if you’re staying in town.
Gerupuk Bay – This is one of Lombok’s most famous surfing areas, located near Kuta. The bay has several spots suitable for different levels, from beginners to advanced surfers. The most well-known breaks in this bay include Gerupuk Inside, Gerupuk Outside, and Don-Don.
Air Guling – Close to Kuta, this spot offers a right-hand barrel for advanced surfers and a mellower left that can be suitable for intermediates. It’s less crowded than other spots but can get quite powerful, so it’s recommended for those with confidence in their surfing abilities.
Selong Belanak – This beach is perfect for beginners, with gentle rolling waves and a sandy bottom. It’s a great place to take lessons and get comfortable in the water, with beautiful scenery to match.
Lomboks unique (and sometimes challenging) surfspots
Each of these spots has its own unique charm and challenges, catering to different levels of surfing ability. The best time for surfing in Lombok is during the dry season, from April to October, when the swells are consistent and the winds are favorable. Always respect the local surf etiquette and environment when visiting these spots, and consider hiring a local guide or instructor to get the best out of your surf experience.
